We also provide patients with the ClearBalance® patient-friendly repayment option for the medical expenses they incur for the services they receive.
Cost of Medical Care
We're committed to being there when you need us. This means medical center services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The costs of operating on a 24-hour basis for the community are reflected in our hospital prices. It includes your occupancy, 24-hour professional nursing care, meals, linens and laundering, housekeeping, utilities, hospital maintenance and other needed services.
There are also additional charges for any special services you receive such as the use of the operating rooms, laboratory tests, radiology, physical therapy, medications and special supplies.
If you receive services from specialists, like surgeons, radiologists or anesthesiologists, you will receive a separate bill from them.

2019 CMS Required Posting of Standard Charges
For 2019, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) enacted new rules that require hospitals to publish standard hospital charges on their public websites that are in a machine-readable format (i.e. .csv, .xml). These lists of charges will be updated annually. MaineGeneral Medical Center’s standard charges can be viewed in the following files:

Patients often find it helpful to know how much a procedure or test is going to cost before they have it done, especially if they do not have insurance and are self-paying for the procedure.

MaineGeneral accepts most insurance plans, Medicare and MaineCare. Every insurance plan is unique, so please check with your insurance carrier (including Medicare) to find out what types of treatment your insurance will cover.
If you don't have insurance, we can help you apply for any available financial assistance. You may qualify for MaineGeneral's uncompensated care services program.
If you can't afford to pay for your hospital care, MaineGeneral may be able to help. We can see if you qualify for full or partial free care through our free care program. Grants and other forms of help may also be available.
This program does not cover elective (optional) procedures.

Self-Pay and Prompt Payment Discounts
MaineGeneral Medical Center and its physician practices offer a "self-pay discount" for those who do not have insurance and are self-pay for their care.
Depending on where services are provided (medical center or physician practice site), the discount:
- Either will be automatically deducted from the billing statement before it is sent to the patient; or
- A notice about the availability of the discount will be included with the statement, directing patients to call MaineGeneral's Business Office to learn how to obtain it.
MaineGeneral also offers a "prompt payment discount" for self-pay balances, including balances after insurance and those for patients without insurance.
