Millions of Americans are affected by incontinence, a condition where a person is unable to hold urine or prevent its leakage.

The good news is that incontinence is treatable and generally does not require surgery. Our staff offers a range of therapies for incontinence.

Types of Incontinence

Common types of incontinence include:
  • Stress incontinence Urine leaks when you do anything that strains or stresses the abdomen, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing and jumping.

  • Urge incontinence A strong uncontrollable need to empty the bladder, also known as overactive bladder.

    You may feel as if you can't wait to reach a toilet or you may leak urine without any warning.

    Causes include infection that irritates the bladder lining and damage to the nerves that normally control the bladder.

  • Mixed incontinence A combination of stress and urge incontinence.

  • Overflow incontinence Occurs when the bladder becomes so full that it simply overflows. This happens when bladder weakness or a blocked urethra prevents normal emptying.

    An enlarged prostate can result in such blockage.

    Bladder weakness happens most often in people with diabetes, heavy alcohol users, and others with decreased nerve function.

Treatment

  • Evaluation and assessment

  • Biofeedback to learn how to contract the pelvic floor muscles

  • Education on diet

  • Bladder training

  • Strengthening of pelvic floor muscles and associated hip and abdominal muscles

You can improve your urinary health, starting now, by:

  • Avoiding bladder irritants like caffeine, alcohol, citrus juice and spicy food

  • Drinking 8 glasses of water each day

  • Exercising regularly

  • Waiting to go to the bathroom every two hours or longer

  • Obtaining a rehabilitation therapy referral
