MaineGeneral Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a MaineGeneral Medical Center program, has provided services to our clients' employees in central and western Maine since 1983.
We offer confidential assessment and short-term counseling to employees and their families to help them find their own answers to life's problems.
Our staff also makes the referrals employees need to help them function optimally on the job and in their lives.
Our master's degree-level clinicians have more than 25 years of experience providing a full range of services as both an internal and external EAP.

MaineGeneral EAP covers more than 15,000 individuals and families in central and western Maine. We have more than 35 client companies, most of which have longstanding relationships with us.
We serve companies with between six and 5,000 employees and work hard to keep the cost of services down while continually improving quality.
MaineGeneral EAP is locally based, easily accessible to employers and their employees and best suited to meet your specific, individual needs. Your employee will be scheduled to see one of our clinicians within three business days of his/her phone call.
Client confidentiality is the most important element of the MaineGeneral EAP program.
Without it, employees will not see MaineGeneral EAP as a safe place to go for help and will not use the services we offer through contracts with their employers.
Confidentiality is stressed in our promotional materials, newsletter, employee orientations and supervisory trainings. It's also stressed during each individual appointment.
We are careful to advise clients that they have complete control over what we communicate and to whom, with the exception of mandatory reporting.

What is an Employee Assistance Program?
An EAP is a free, voluntary, strictly confidential, professional assessment, short-term counseling and referral service. The goal is to help employees and family members with personal concerns that may affect job performance or personal well-being.
What types of concerns can an EAP help solve?
Issues may include relationship struggles, grief, financial or legal concerns, emotional stress or problems caused by substance use. When a job performance problem occurs, your supervisor may encourage EAP use.
But aren't these personal problems?
Yes, they are — until they begin to affect the employee's job performance or family life. If left unsolved, they can affect the morale of co-workers and the overall effectiveness of the organization. The confidential assistance you can receive through an EAP can prevent these problems from becoming more serious.
Why is this program needed?
Progressive organizations such as yours provide the EAP to employees and family members because they care about their employees. It's proven that addressing even the slightest concern can reduce absenteeism, improve productivity and morale, and reduce health insurance use.

Will my call be kept confidential?
Absolutely! Confidentiality is the most important aspect of EAP. The discussion of the problem is strictly between you and the EAP counselor. Neither your employer nor your co-workers will have any knowledge of your use of the program.
Who will pay for the cost of services?
The EAP sessions are free to employees and their family members living in their household or who are dependents. If further assistance is needed, your regular health insurance and/or other benefits will be considered.
If you need other services that are not covered by insurance, your EAP counselor will try to minimize the cost by making referrals to the most appropriate resource. These expenses will be your responsibility. When applicable, sick leave, vacation time or leave of absence may be used.
