GI (Gastrointestinal) Cancer
The Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Program at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Augusta, Maine, is a multidisciplinary clinic that provides excellent diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for patients with cancer of the digestive system.
Gastrointestinal cancer is any cancer affecting the GI tract including cancers of the:
- Esophagus
- Stomach
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Bile duct
- Small intestine
- Large intestine (colon)
- Rectum
- Anus
GI cancer symptoms depend on the cancer type and stage and can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Frequent indigestion
- Trouble swallowing
- Abdominal bloating and/or pain (worsening after meals)
- Feeling full without eating a lot of food
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
- Change in bowel habits
- Blood in stool
- Yellowing of skin and eyes
Testing to diagnose GI cancer may include:
- Blood tests
- Scope (endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy)
- Imaging tests (CT scan, MRI, Pet scan, Barium swallow)
- Biopsies for tissue specimens
Treatment may include:
- Surgery
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
- Targeted therapies
- Clinical trials
