- This educational program is designed to enhance the knowledge and clinical preparedness of athletic trainers in recognizing, managing, and preventing life-threatening cardiac conditions in athletes. Despite increasing awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and related syndromes in the athletic population, significant gaps may remain in standardized screening practices and emergency preparedness.
- This course will provide evidence-based instruction on the most common hereditary and acquired cardiac conditions associated with sudden death in athletes, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), atrial fibrillation (A-fib), long QT syndrome, and commotio cordis. Attendees will learn to interpret warning signs, assess risk factors, and apply current best practices in pre-participation cardiac screening.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
• Recall the components of a sports specific cardiac screening.
• Explore the proposed mechanisms of commotio cordis and A-fib in athletes.
• Identify the protective and detrimental effects of exercise on A-fib risk.
• Explain the anatomy and typical presentation of anomalous coronary arteries.
• Explain the current guidelines and controversies around return to play in Long QT.
