Protecting Your Bones
May is National Osteoporosis Month, a time to focus on good bone health.
Osteoporosis is a condition of weakened, thinning bones. Once bone is lost, they can easily break.
Osteoporosis is not a normal part of aging, and contributes to bone fractures in nearly half of women in the US. Nearly a quarter of all men will also break a bone in their lifetime because of osteoporosis. Most people with osteoporosis have no symptoms; you may not know you have it before you break a bone.
Osteoporosis can be prevented. It’s never too early to think of your bone health. Diet and exercise play a large role.
Talk to your doctor about your bone health, and ask if you should get a test to see if you are at risk for osteoporosis.
MaineGeneral’s Bone Health Program can help. We offer the most up-to-date tests – a bone mineral density scan (DEXA) and laboratory testing. We’ll work with you to help you improve your bone strength.
We offer DEXA screening in Augusta, Gardiner, Oakland and Winthrop. Our Bone Health Program is offered in Oakland and Augusta.
