The Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ analyses of data from 354 general thoracic surgeons over a three-year period reveals that MaineGeneral meets all national quality benchmarks for lobectomy surgery for lung cancer. These benchmarks include survival and lack of major complications following surgery. By meeting these benchmarks, MaineGeneral has earned the same quality rating as such well-known institutions as Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston! This means patients and families do not have to travel to get high-quality care for lung cancer.

The Data Analyses of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons General Thoracic Surgery Database includes data regarding procedures performed from July 2016 through June 2019. The goal of this database is to encourage quality improvement for general thoracic surgery patients, provide public accountability and perform valuable research. Congratulations to MaineGeneral’s thoracic surgeons Seth Blank, MD, and Alfred Proto, MD, for providing such quality care close to home.
