Pastoral Care Volunteers
In addition to professional chaplains, MaineGeneral uses trained volunteers as Spiritual Care volunteers.
Similar to other hospital volunteers, spiritual care volunteers are lay people who expand the scope of spiritual care by visiting patients and providing spiritual support.
They are specialized members of MaineGeneral Medical Center's volunteer program.
Trained Eucharistic ministers from area Roman Catholic communities bring Holy Communion to Roman Catholic patients and provide spiritual support through active listening and compassionate presence.
MaineGeneral's Spiritual Care Volunteers:
- Receive substantial training under the supervision of both MaineGeneral's Volunteer Services and Spiritual Care departments.
- Are trained to recognize circumstances when a patient should be referred to one of our professional chaplains.
- Participate in programs of continuing education and mutual peer support.
