After 10 years working on the medical/surgical unit at MaineGeneral Medical Center, I came to MaineGeneral HomeCare feeling confident I could complete any nursing skill. In homecare I found I had to refocus my nursing care to what the patient wanted.
When a patient allows you into his or her home it changes the balance – you have to work to create a relationship by first establishing trust. Once there is trust, you can move toward education, motivation and change – still on the patient’s terms.
Homecare is a great nursing opportunity that requires independence and creativity and allows nurses to help make positive changes in a community.
