MGMC Pharmacy Department

MaineGeneral Medical Center's Pharmacy Department provides state-of-the-art pharmaceutical care throughout the medical center and MaineGeneral pharmacists provide on-site, 24-hour pharmacy coverage for acute care patients.
Distributive services include cabinet-based unit dose medication dispensing, a robotic medication storage and inventory management system and a USP 797 compliant IV room. 
Pharmacists oversee dispensing functions in the main pharmacy, as well as maintain decentralized practice in three medical/surgical units, the Critical Care Unit and Maternity and Pediatrics.
Bedside barcode scanning of medications has been recently implemented throughout the medical center's inpatient units.

Future Initiatives

We look forward to implementing new services in the future such as:
  • Antibiotic Stewardship
  • Development of a surgical satellite pharmacy
  • Development of an Emergency Department satellite pharmacy
  • Participation in medical emergency (Code 99) calls
  • Medication reconciliation

MGMC Pharmacy Education Programs

  • Husson University College of Pharmacy provides a full-time faculty member to train APPE students in general medicine (acute care).

  • MaineGeneral pharmacists serve as preceptors for APPE pharmacy student rotations in institutional, general medicine and ambulatory care oncology for:
    • Albany College of Pharmacy
    • Husson University College of Pharmacy
    • Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University
    • University of New England College of Pharmacy
    • University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy
    • Other colleges as requested

  • MaineGeneral also provides IPPE pharmacy student  rotations for:
    • Husson University College of Pharmacy
    • University of New England College of Pharmacy
