Goals and Objectives


MaineGeneral Medical Center's (MGMC) Emergency Medicine Fellowship is a year-long training program that will transition physicians from Family Medicine or Internal Medicine to Emergency Medicine.


  • To understand the full breadth and depth of the practice of Emergency Medicine
  • To develop skills and knowledge necessary to effectively clinically work as an Emergency Physician in an emergency department

Objectives Based on Competencies

Consistent with the overriding framework of the Accreditatation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) six (6) core competencies, the educational objectives are followed, in bold italics, by the specific competencies they promote.

Competencies are abbreviated as follows:
  • Patient Care (PC)
  • Medical Knowledge (MK)
  • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement (PLBI)
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills (IPCS)
  • Professionalism (P)
  • Systems-Based Practice (SBP)

By the end of the year, the Fellow will:
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead and coordinate care with multiple nursing and technician staff members (IPCS, P)
  • Effectively coordinate care with primary care providers and specialist physicians (IPCS, SBP)
  • Provide evidence-based and cost-effective emergency care (PLBI, SBP, PC, MK)

  • Develop sensitivity for subtle presentations of critical illnesses (PC, MK)

  • Develop time-efficient and appropriate history, exam, differential diagnosis in the emergency department setting (PC, MK)

  • Provide effective diagnostic and treatment plans for all patients who present to the emergency department (PC, MK)

  • Communicate with patients and family in a sensitive and compassionate manner (PC, IPCS)

  • Coordinate effective and appropriate prehospital and inter-facility transport care (MK, SBP)
