Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative

Support, knowledge, advanced technology and a family-centered approach.

This is Maternal Child Health at MaineGeneral.

MaineGeneral Medical Center is one of four hospitals in Maine designated as a Baby-Friendly Hospital.

What is Baby-Friendly?

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

It encourages hospitals and birthing centers to offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding.

The BFHI assists hospitals in giving breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully start and continue breastfeeding their babies.

It also recognizes those hospitals that have done so.

MaineGeneral has one of the best lactation programs in the state. We have several International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) available daily to breastfeeding mothers.

Our nursing staff has completed extensive training in breastfeeding management and our lactations consultants teach MaineGeneral's breastfeeding class and lead its breastfeeding support groups.
