Early detection is a woman's best defense in the fight against breast cancer. The earlier cancer is detected, the more options a woman has for treatment.
The American Cancer Society has developed the following guidelines for the detection of breast cancer in women:
- Women aged 20 years and older should practice breast self-examination.
- Women between 20 and 40 should have a physical examination of their breasts every three years.
- Women should have a baseline mammogram by age 40. Please discuss this with your physician.
- Women 40 years of age or older should have a physical examination of their breasts annually, as well as a mammogram every year.
