Aquatic therapy can benefit all types of rehabilitation patients.
Warm water exercises decrease stress on a patient's joints, which helps decrease pain and stiffness.
Water also offers universal resistance, allowing opposing muscles to work equally so patients develop muscular strength, endurance and joint flexibility.
Patients are transitioned from the pool to a land-based or community pool program.
MaineGeneral has heated aquatic therapy pools at its 15 Enterprise Drive, Augusta and Manchester locations that are available for individualized treatment.
Group classes are offered in Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center pool.
