licensed clinical social worker Barbara Damren
started her health care career in nursing in the 1980s after
earning an associate's degree in nursing from the University of
Maine at Augusta in 1980.
She earned a bachelor's degree in community health education from
the University of Maine at Farmington in 1993 and a master's
degree in social work from the University of Maine at Orono in
Her association with Hospice began in 2005 through an internship
and she joined the team the following year.
Barbara says she faced many family deaths as a child. During her
career in the hospital - before there was a Medicare-certified
Hospice program - she found that dying was not done well.
To Barbara it is a pleasure to be part of a team that makes the
process of dying easier for individuals and their families.
Part of the attraction of working in Hospice for Barbara is its
"Every person, every family, every situation, every death is
different and unique," she says. "There is nothing routine about
working in Hospice. It's gift is that it is not a 'cookie-cutter
job.' It is whatever is needed by the individual and family."
