Child Abuse Policy

Ensuring children's well being is our number one priority.

When a staff member knows or has reasonable cause to suspect a child has been or is likely to be abused or neglected, that person will immediately notify the ELC administrator or director of risk management at MaineGeneral Health.

The verbal report will be followed by a written report containing the following information:
  • The child's name and the person(s) responsible for her/his care or custody;

  • The nature and extent of suspected abuse or neglect, including a description of injuries and any explanation given for them; and

  • Any other information the person making the report believes helpful.
     

Upon receipt of the verbal report, the ELC administrator or director of risk management will immediately call the Maine Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) office in Augusta (8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday) or the department's 24-hour Children's Emergency Line (after hours) at (800) 452-1999.

This verbal report will be followed by a written report to DHHS, if requested, within 48 hours.

Parents/guardians always will be notified of actions to be taken.

Parents also will be asked to schedule an appointment with a child specialist to make sure children get the help they need.
