Surgery is the only proven, consistently effective treatment for morbid obesity.
A landmark study published October 13, 2004 in the Journal of the American Medical Association found bariatric surgery improved or resolved type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and high cholesterol in the vast majority of morbidly obese patients.
Most had lost 55 to 70 percent of their excess weight one year after bariatric surgery. According to the study:
- Type 2 diabetes was eliminated in 76.8 percent of patients, while 86 percent eliminated or improved their condition.
- Hypertension (high blood pressure) was eliminated in 61.7 percent of patients and resolved or improved in 78.5 percent.
- Obstructive sleep apnea was eliminated in 85.7 percent of patients.
- High cholesterol levels decreased in more than 70 percent of patients.
