Phototherapy

Phototherapy uses specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light to treat skin disease.

Medical phototherapy differs from tanning booths in that phototherapy is delivered using treatment specific equipment under medical supervision to maximize its effectiveness and safety.

Our staff delivers more than 3,500 ultraviolet light treatments each year at Maine's only hospital-based phototherapy treatment unit.

Of the many skin diseases treated with phototherapy, the most common are psoriasis, eczema, T-cell lymphoma (a type of cancer), vitiligo (pigment loss) and itching.

Patients must be under the care of a dermatologist at MaineGeneral Medical Center and primary care physicians can arrange referrals to a dermatologist.
